Weekly Robotics #335

Issue 335

As you will see in the sponsored feature, we are organizing a robotics devroom at FOSDEM again. Kimberly McGuire accurately describes this event as a Woodstock of technical conferences. The event is free to attend, and I highly recommend making the trip if you can.

FOSDEM 2026 Robotics Devroom [Sponsored]

Call for proposals for our Robotics and Simulation devroom at FOSDEM is now out! If you have something interesting to share with the community, please apply. The event takes place on the 31st of January in Brussels and is free to attend.

1X Neo preorders are on

1X Neo preorders are on cover

1X launched a pre-order for NEO, their humanoid robot. You can rent the bot for $499 per month or purchase it outright for $20,000. The FAQ on the website is quite transparent: if the robot cannot perform a chore autonomously, you can schedule a one-time expert to teleoperate it. We will see whether it’s warranted or not, but you can find the MKBHD rant on this on YouTube.

K-Scale Labs Cancels K-Bot Orders, Open-Sources All IP After Funding Fails

K-Scale Labs Cancels K-Bot Orders, Open-Sources All IP After Funding Fails cover

K-Scale Labs didn’t manage to secure funding and appears to be shutting down. I’ll forever remember them as a highly motivated team working from a huge mansion, as we could see in Leon Ex Machina’s interview. You can find the K-Scale repositories on GitHub. Big thanks to the team to their contributions to open-source robotics 🫡

Back in issue #330 I featured Just1 by Nicolas Rodriguez. Recently, Nicolas wrote a detailed report about this project, which includes more information and lessons learned.

Does 3D-Printed Foam Make Good Custom Tires? cover

Since we are on the topic of small rovers, why not use foaming TPU to make your own tires? The author of the video embedded on this page goes after various materials and tests them on a small rover.

Actuate presented by Foxglove

At Foxglove, we just released the recordings from Actuate 2025, our robotics developer conference. I’ve just started watching these recordings, and the ones I’ve seen so far are very detailed, covering implementation details. I highly recommend them to anyone building robots these days.

What Happens if you Abuse a Robot? (I hit him with my truck)

If you felt sorry for the robot dogs being kicked back in the day, don’t watch this video. To my horror, I see social media posts every day claiming that this team bought this robot to do chores and was disappointed by it not performing well.

If you care about robotics simulation, PX4, the open-source autopilot project, needs your help. Take this 10-minute survey and make the world a better place.
